5 Must Do Hikes in Oahu

Oahu is a beautiful island that is known for its stunning beaches, lush greenery, and breathtaking views. My favorite way to explore the island is by going on a hike! It’s a great way to stay active while still enjoying the beauty of the island. Whether you’re a beginner hiker, like me, or an experienced one, there are quite a few easy hikes that offer the gorgeous views without being too strenuous. Here are a few of my favorites:

At the top of Diamond Head

1. Diamond Head Hike

Fairly close to Waikiki, Diamond Head is one of the most popular hikes on Oahu and for good reason. The hike consists of a well-maintained trail that takes you to the top of a volcanic crater. It’s about 1.6 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 560 feet. After a few set of stairs at the end (be careful, they’re pretty steep!) you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean.

Pro tip: Get dropped off in an Uber and walk your way into the entrance! Parking can be a bit crazy, so this is what we usually do and it’s a quick ride from the center of Waikiki.

2. Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

One of my personal favorites, the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is another popular hike on the island that offers picturesque views. The hike consists of a completely paved road, with an elevation gain of 500 feet and a length of 2 miles. There are a few stopping points along the way if you need to catch your breath, or if you just want to take it all in. Like Diamond Head, parking can be tricky.

Pro tip: Come as soon as it opens to secure a parking spot. Parking is limited, but usually you can get lucky in the early mornings.

3. Manoa Falls Trail

The Manoa Falls Trail is a beautiful hike that takes you through a lush rainforest to a stunning waterfall. The hike is 1.6 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 800 feet. The trail can be pretty muddy and slippery, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. At the end of the hike, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning waterfall that is perfect for taking photos. Assuming weather permits, you can swim in the waterfall if you want. There’s a lifeguard on duty, but it does get really busy with tourists, really fast.

4. Aiea Loop Trail

The Aiea Loop Trail is a scenic hike that takes you through lush forests and offers stunning views of the island. The hike is 4.8 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 900 feet. The trail is well-maintained and offers plenty of shade, making it a great hike for a hot day. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the island and the ocean.

5. Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site Trail

The Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site Trail is a short hike that takes you to an ancient Hawaiian temple. The hike is 0.2 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 50 feet. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the ocean and the temple. At the top, you can explore the temple and learn about its history.
