The Best Coffee Shops to Visit in Tokyo

Over the past few years, we’ve made it a point to explore as many coffee shops as we could across the city—because let’s face it, Tokyo’s coffee scene is seriously underrated. They’re great places to hang out and relax when you’re out and about, while also having some of the best tasting coffee and matcha you can try.

So next time you’re wandering through Tokyo’s neighborhoods, skip the usual chain and explore some of these coffee shops. You might just find your new favorite spot! 🙂

1. About Life Coffee Brewers – Shibuya

Tucked away in the hustle of Shibuya, About Life Coffee Brewers is the perfect spot to recharge, especially if you’ve been walking around all morning and need a break. This coffee shop is located at the bottom floor of All Day Place, and the space serves as a bar at night.

Our favorite drink: Iced oat milk latte

Address: 1 Chome-17-1 Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0002, Japan

2. Streamer Coffee Company – Shibuya

Streamer Coffee Company in Shibuya is where we feel like the cool crowd hangs out. Known for their signature “military lattes” (a latte with matcha), it’s a place where coffee meets creativity. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming, with baristas who take their craft seriously. The space itself is also great to do some work or read a book!

Our favorite drink: Iced military latte

Address: 1 Chome-20-28 Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0002, Japan

3. Valley Park Stand – Shibuya

For a truly unique coffee experience in Shibuya, Valley Park Stand is a must-visit. We say unique because this cafe is nestled at the top of Miyashita Park, in the Sequence hotel. This cafe is specifically cashless, so make sure you have your card on you. After you grab a drink, take it outside and explore the park!

Our favorite drink: Salted butter caramel latte

Address: Japan, 〒150-0001 Tokyo, Shibuya, Jingumae, 6 Chome−20−10 MIYASHITA PARK North sequence MIYASHITA PARK 4F

4. Nozy Coffee – Shibuya

Located in one of our favorite parts of Shibuya, Nozy Coffee is the perfect escape from the usual city chaos. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or just in need of a good caffeine fix, their espresso drinks are top-notch. If you’re serious about your coffee, this cafe will showcase a few different types and will offer their drinks based on each type. And if you’re up for it, they’ve also got some of the best tasting espresso softcream. Not technically coffee, but close enough.

Our favorite drink: Regular black coffee — typically whatever roast is recommended at the time

Address: 5-17-13 Jingumae, Shibuya 150-0001 Tokyo Prefecture

5. Hype Beans – Daikanyama (CLOSED)

hype beans golf

If you’re in Daikanyama and are also a fan of golf, Hype Beans has got you covered. This cafe is at the base of Hype Golf, a boutique golf apparel store. While there isn’t anywhere to sit or hang out here, the store itself feels modern and effortlessly cool.

Our favorite drink: Iced americano

Address: 27-3, Sarugakucho, Shibuya Ku, Tokyo To, 150-0033, Japan

6. Look Up Coffee – Shimokitazawa

Shimokitazawa is full of charm, and Look Up Coffee fits right in. This cafe is a great way to start your day before all the vintage shops open because not only do they have good coffee, they have great food too. On the other hand, if your tired from all the exploring and need a break, they have seating on the inside and outside to relax while drinking your coffee.

Our favorite drink: Iced matcha with oatmilk (matcha is from Kagoshima!)

Address: Japan, 〒155-0031 Tokyo, Setagaya City, Kitazawa, 2 Chome−36−14 ガーデンテラス下北沢 1階

7. Bagel Cafe 88 – Shimokitazawa

Another cafe we really love in the Shimokitazawa area is Bagel Cafe 88. This is a true hidden gem because we don’t feel like we ever see anyone talking about this place. This cafe has such a cozy vibe, but you have to come here to try their bagels. We’ve had bagels throughout the US (NY has some of our favorite), and this Tokyo cafe has one of the top 3 bagels we’ve ever had. Definitely give this place a try!

Our favorite drink: Kinako latte

Address: Japan, 〒155-0031 Tokyo, Setagaya City, Kitazawa, 2 Chome−27−12 林ビル

8. Swell Coffee Roasters – Nakameguro

If you’re in Nakameguro and looking for a cafe that’s all about quality and craftsmanship, Swell Coffee Roasters is your spot. They have a wide variety of different beans you can try (you can smell them indvidually!) and even roast their own at the cafe. This is a coffee shop I always recommend buying your beans from to take home because you can buy them there.

Our favorite drink: Iced americano

Address: 上目黒1-11-1 OAK BLDG Ⅱ 1F, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Japan 1530051

9. ROAR Coffee – Ginza

After all the shopping in Ginza and you’re looking for a spot to rest, ROAR Coffee is a great option. ROAR has 2 locations in Ginza, and we discovered the cafe walking around looking for a spot to rest after shopping for 2+ hours. ROAR roasts their own coffee beans, and you can buy them in the shop to take home.

Our favorite drink: Iced latte with oatmilk, light roast

Address: 〒104-0061 Tokyo, Chuo City, Ginza, 3 Chome−12−5第二 宏和ビル 1F

10. X Coffee – Ginza

If you’re wandering around Ginza and need a coffee, X Coffee is a good shout. But the cool thing about this place is their bean selection. They always have a bunch – like eight different types – and they’ll even let you take a whiff before you decide. They roast their own too, which is always a good sign for proper coffee fans.

Our favorite drink: Black coffee

Address: 〒104-0061 Tokyo, Chuo City, Ginza, 2 Chome−11−1 Ginza Land Bldg., 1F

11. % Arabica – Azabudai Hills

We don’t really think this coffee shop needs an introduction (since locations have popped up everywhere), but we can’t visit Japan without going to % Arabica at least once! What’s great about this location is it’s in Azabudai Hills, which is also where the new TeamLabs Borderless is. This is a great spot to kill some time or spend your morning before a day of exploring the city.

Our favorite drink: Iced Kyoto latte

Address:  〒105-0001 Tokyo, Minato City, Toranomon, 5 Chome−9−1 ガーデンプラザB B1
