Nestled between Kyoto and Nara, Uji, is a picturesque city known for its history, cultural significance, and, of course, its world-class matcha. Located just a short train ride from Kyoto, Uji offers a peaceful escape perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay.
Here’s our ultimate Uji, Japan guide, highlighting the must-see attractions and activities that make this city one of our can’t-miss stops while we’re visiting the country.

1. Visit the Iconic Byodoin Temple
A trip to Uji wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back over 1,000 years. The temple’s Phoenix Hall is famously depicted on the back of the Japanese 10-yen coin. Its gardens and reflective pond create a picture-perfect setting that will leave you feeling peaceful and serene.
Fun fact: If Byodoin Temple feels familiar, it might be because there’s a replica in Oahu, Hawaii. We’ve been to the Hawaiian version and loved it, but seeing the original in Uji was an unforgettable experience!
2. Explore the Ujigami Shrine
Located near Byodoin Temple, Ujigami Shrine is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. Its peaceful atmosphere and historical significance make it a must-visit spot to explore more of Uji’s spiritual side.

3. Indulge in Uji’s Famous Matcha
Uji is famous for its high-quality matcha, and a visit here is a matcha lover’s dream come true. Two places stand out when it comes to purchasing authentic matcha:
- Horii Shichimeien: Founded in 1879, this historic tea producer is renowned for its “Oku no Yama” tea garden, one of the oldest in Japan, and its premium matcha, including the meticulously crafted “Narisatono.” The people were so nice here, and very helpful in helping us choose which matcha to purchase.
- Nakamura Tokichi: One the most famous tea shops in Uji, Nakamura Tokichi is known for its matcha desserts and beautifully packaged tea products. We purchased quite a bit here, but definitely recommend heading here early – lots was already sold out by early afternoon!
Take the time to explore the shops, learn about the different grades of matcha, and definitely bring some Uji matcha home with you!
4. Try a Matcha Grinding Workshop
Dive even deeper into Uji’s matcha culture by participating in a matcha grinding workshop. These hands-on experiences allow you to grind tea leaves into fine matcha powder using traditional stone mills. It’s not only educational but also incredibly rewarding to sip tea made from matcha you’ve ground yourself. This would also be super fun if you are traveling with friends or a larger group.
5. Stroll Along the Uji River
The beautiful Uji River is the heart of the city, offering scenic views and a tranquil ambiance. Cross the iconic Tachibanabashi Bridge, visit some of the surrounding parks, or enjoy a leisurely boat ride. During the cherry blossom season, the riverbanks transform into a sea of pink, making it one of the most photogenic spots in Uji, Japan.

6. Experience the Tale of Genji Museum
For literature enthusiasts, the Tale of Genji Museum provides an in-depth look at one of Japan’s most celebrated literary works. Uji plays a significant role in the final chapters of “The Tale of Genji,” and the museum beautifully ties the city’s history to this iconic story.
How Long Should You Spend in Uji?
If you’re staying nearby, like in Kyoto, then a day trip to Uji is definitely more than enough time. A well-planned day trip will still give you the chance to explore the serenity of the city and indulge in its matcha.
