Get ready for an amazing 7-day trip as we explore the cultural wonders of Kyoto, take a day trip to Nara, and soak in the vibrant energy of Osaka. We’ll be discovering historical landmarks, enjoying the beauty of nature, and savoring some delicious local eats along the way. This itinerary is designed to seamlessly blend the past with the present, promising you a week filled with cultural immersion and unforgettable experiences!

Day 1: Kyoto’s Timeless Beauty: Fushimi Inari and Gion
Morning: Kick off your Kyoto adventure at the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, where 10,000 torii gates creates a mesmerizing pathway. Take a leisurely morning stroll, embracing the spiritual atmosphere that surrounds this sacred site. Even though you’ll likely encounter a lot of tourists, it is still one of our favorite parts of Kyoto. The hike to the top is definitely tiring, so wear comfy walking shoes. But no worries if you don’t want to go to the top, you can go back down at a few points along the pathway.
Afternoon: In the afternoon, venture into the historic Gion district. Explore traditional machiya houses, catching a glimpse of geisha culture. For an authentic Kyoto experience, don’t miss the chance to enjoy tea at a local teahouse. You can even rent a kimono for the day! We also love indulging in the small street food stalls, so go with an empty stomach.
Tip: While you’re in Kyoto, consider staying at a ryokan for an immersive cultural experience!

Day 2: Arashiyama: Bamboo Forest and Monkeys
Morning: Jump into Day 2 with a trip to Arashiyama, starting with the Bamboo Grove. Take in the serenity of the Bamboo Grove during a morning stroll—a perfect way to kick off your day. We recommend going as early as you can to experience the forest without too many people (and take some really great photos), as it starts getting busy around ~8:30am with both locals and tourists. If you can, take a rickshaw around the forest! It was an unforgettable experience.
Afternoon: Keep the momentum going with a scenic boat ride along the Hozugawa River, a fun way to sightsee and really take in the beauty of Kyoto. Later in the day, head to Iwatayama Monkey Park for a unique experience observing Japanese macaques (monkeys with reddish faces) against breathtaking panoramic views. Heads up though, the hike to the top of the monkey park is a bit of a trek, about 20-30 minutes uphill.

Day 3: Kyoto Imperial Palace and Gardens
Morning: Ready for a bit of history? Explore the imperial history of Japan at Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto-gosho) in the morning. Wander through majestic halls and lush gardens, soaking in the rich heritage. For a bit more information about the history, we recommend doing a guided tour for deeper insights into each part of the palace.
Afternoon: Continue your day with a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Kyoto Imperial Palace Gardens. We enjoy this walk purely because of the meticulously landscaped grounds and serene ponds. Consider renting a bike to cover more ground and discover hidden corners of the expansive gardens. Afterwards, explore the nearby Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its “nightingale floors” that chirp when walked upon. The intricate architecture and beautiful gardens make it a must-visit!

Day 4: Day Trip to Nara
Morning: Start today early on a day trip to Nara, known for its friendly and polite deer. Begin at Nara Park, where you can purchase deer crackers to feed them. They bow back to you if you bow to them first! Take your time interacting with the deer and capture some memorable photos. Afterwards, explore Todai-ji Temple, which is located within Nara Park. Visit the colossal bronze Buddha statue housed within the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall). The intricate wooden architecture of the temple is a testament to ancient Japanese craftsmanship, and is over 1,000 years old.
Afternoon: Visit Kasuga Taisha Shrine in the afternoon, a Shinto shrine known for its lantern-lined pathways and serene vibes. The surrounding primeval forest adds a Ghibli-like touch to the shrine’s surroundings, the perfect place to channel your inner Mononoke. 😉

Day 5: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori
Morning: On day 5, make your way to Osaka and kick off your day exploring Osaka Castle. Delve into Japan’s feudal past as you wander through the historical grounds. The castle’s architecture and exhibits offer a peek into some of Japan’s greatest historic moments. And seeing the castle is free!
If you have time, visit the Osaka Museum of History, located near the castle. The museum provides additional insights into the city’s rich past, and a great panoramic view of Osaka from its observation deck.
Afternoon: As the day progresses, make your way to the lively Dotonbori district. This area is best known for its neon lights (think Time Square) and abundance of food. Don’t miss out on trying street food like Takoyaki (octopus balls) and Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). And don’t forget to take a picture with the iconic Glico Running Man sign.

Day 6: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and Umeda Sky Building
Morning: Start the morning at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, where you can explore diverse underwater ecosystems and get up close with captivating marine life exhibits. Next, visit Tempozan Harbor Village, where you can explore attractions like the Tempozan Ferris Wheel and the Santa Maria cruise. Enjoy unforgettable views of Osaka Bay from the Ferris wheel.
Afternoon: Head to the Umeda Sky Building in the afternoon. The observation deck provides even more breathtaking views of Osaka’s modern skyline. Take your time soaking in the beauty before venturing to Namba for a taste of the Osaka’s entertainment scene.

Day 7: Food Adventures in Osaka
Morning: End your trip with a leisurely morning stroll through Kuromon Ichiba Market. Try even more local street food, and buy last minute souvenirs. Make sure you save some space in your stomach though, because your next stop is also known as Osaka’s Kitchen Town, Kappabashi Dogu Street. Discover a variety of kitchenware, eat snacks, and experience the life of this unique area.
Afternoon: Lastly, make your way to Shinsaibashi. Browse shops and local boutiques for last minute shopping. Maybe look for an extra luggage to pack everything else you bought throughout your trip! We like to browse the vintage shops in this area.
And there you have it! Here is how we would spend 7-days through Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. 🙂 Safe travels! 🌟🎌
