Known for its immersive and interactive exhibits, TeamLabs Tokyo offers a unique experience that blends art, technology, and nature. That being said, it’s definitely not for everyone! Knowing the difference between TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets can help you decide which one (or both) to visit. It’s easy to get the two confused, especially since Planets is the one that gets talked about the most on TIkTok and Instagram:
- TeamLab Borderless Tokyo: This is the larger of the two and features a series of interconnected rooms where digital art flows seamlessly from one space to another. It’s designed to be an endless, ever-changing experience where you can get lost in the art. Think of it as a digital art museum with no boundaries (hence the “Borderless”). Expect to spend about 2 to 3 hours here to fully appreciate the different rooms. This one is located in the Mori Digital Art Museum building in Azabudai Hills.
- TeamLab Planets Tokyo: This one is more about immersive, physical experiences. You’ll walk through water, lie on reflective surfaces, and interact directly with the art installations. It’s designed to engage all your senses, making you feel like part of the artwork. Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours to explore everything, and even longer if you want to take your time. This one is located in Toyosu, Tokyo.

- Cameras: You can bring your camera, but you’ll be so busy experiencing the exhibit that it may be more of an inconvenience than anything else. Photos with your phone are more than enough to capture the moments you want to remember.

Getting to TeamLabs Tokyo is pretty simple! For TeamLabs Borderless, take the Yurikamome Line to Aomi Station or the Rinkai Line to Tokyo Teleport Station. For TeamLabs Planets, head to Shin-Toyosu Station on the Yurikamome Line. Both locations are well-signposted and easy to find via public transport.

What to Wear to TeamLab Planets
Choosing the right outfit for your visit can make your experience better. Here are some tips:
- Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be walking a lot, and this exhibit require you to take off your shoes and socks before entering that you will end up leaving in a locker. Wear something comfy and easy to remove.
- Avoid Short Skirts and Dresses: Some of the experiences involve walking through water or have mirrored floors, so skirts or dresses might not be practical.
- Layered Clothing: The temperature inside can vary, so dressing in layers is a good idea. You can leave any extra layers in the lockers provided.
- Colors and Patterns: Bright, solid colors photograph well against the vibrant backgrounds. Avoid busy patterns that might clash with the surroundings.
How Long to Stay at TeamLab Planets
There isn’t necessarily a time limit in any room you enter besides the last one (the live flower room, which is our favorite). We have been a few times and usually spend 45 minutes to an hour exploring the exhibit. That being said, if you are really into immersive experiences, definitely plan for longer. Our friends stayed almost 4 hours at TeamLab Planets because they really enjoyed it!
Where to Eat after TeamLab Planets
If you are going to TeamLabs earlier in the morning, chances are you’ll be looking for food after you finish walking through the exhibit. While the vegan ramen spot onsite has rave reviews, it’s not open until 11am. Instead, head over to Toyosu Senkyaku Benrai, which opens at 10am. They have a variety of sit down restuarants and food stalls both indoor and outdoor; we could have spent hours here! It’s about a 10-15min walk from TeamLab Planets Tokyo, which makes it the perfect activity afterwards.
Final thoughts: visiting TeamLabs Tokyo is worth the time! Whether you’re admiring the blend of nature and technology or snapping cute pics, there is no doubt that you’ll enjoy it (even if you aren’t someone that typically likes museums).
